  1. Installation Instructions
  2. S3 OS/2 Driver (For OS/2 2.11, 2.1, 2.1 for Windows, and Warp)

  6. Installation Considerations
  7.  
  8. 1.  The installation process assumes that the user knows the maximum 
  9. vertical refresh rate as well as the maximum resolution of the monitor.
  10.  
  11. 2.  When installing the S3 driver over a non-S3 driver (e.g., SVGA), the 
  12. standard IBM VGA driver must be installed first.  This is not required if 
  13. an S3 driver is already installed.
  14.  
  15. 3.  The driver diskettes must be labeled "S3 DRV1"(disk 1) and "S3 DRV2" 
  16. (disk 2).  If it is not labeled then the installation will fail.
  17.  
  18. 4.  The S3 driver will not install unless an S3 chip-based card is installed 
  19. in the machine at the time of the driver installation.

  25. 1.  Make sure you have all open data files saved before continuing the S3 
  26. driver installation.
  27.  
  28. 2.  Make sure Win-OS/2 session and all Seamless Windows applications are 
  29. closed. (Seamless applications are windows applications that run on top of 
  30. the PM Desktop.)
  31.  
  32. 3.  Open an OS/2 command prompt (windowed or full screen).
  33.  
  34. 4.  Insert the driver diskette into the floppy drive. 
  35.  
  36. 5.  Change to the floppy drive (A: or B:) into which you have inserted 
  37. driver disk #1.  Verify that the diskette is labeled "S3 DRV1" (do the 
  38. same for disk #2).  If it is not labeled then type "label S3 DRV1" or 
  39. "label S3 DRV2".
  40.  
  41. 6.  Type S3INST A: C: and press "Enter".  ("A" is the floppy drive; "C" 
  42. is the drive where OS/2 is installed.  If OS/2 is installed on a different 
  43. drive, then use that letter instead).
  44.  
  45. Note: You may see an error message stating could not locate files. Please 
  46. ignore this message.
  47.  
  48. 7.  When prompted, insert Disk #2.  It must be labeled "S3 DRV2".
  49.  
  50. 8.  When prompted, exit the OS/2 command prompt, remove the floppy disk 
  51. from drive, and shutdown and reboot system.
  52.  
  53. 8a.  After bootup, open an OS/2 command prompt (windowed or full screen).  
  54. Insert the floppy disk containing the updated SVGA.EXE.  Copy this file 
  55. into the \OS2 subdirectory of your OS2 drive.
  56.  
  57. 9.  When OS/2 is up, insert disk 1 (S3 DRV1) into the floppy drive.
  58.  
  59. 10. Double click on the the "OS/2 System" icon.
  60.  
  61. 11. Double click on the "System Setup" icon.
  62.  
  63. 12. Double click on the "Display Driver Install" icon. 
  64.  
  65. 13. When prompted by the Display Driver Install dialog, select Primary 
  66. Display and then click the OK button.
  67.  
  68. 14. Select the "32 Bit S3 Display Drivers" option from the Primary Display 
  69. Adapter Type dialog and click the OK button.
  70.  
  71. 15. Select the appropriate option from the Monitor Configuration/Selection 
  72. Utility dialog, and click the 
  73. OK button.  Select "Default" if it is an S3 BIOS that was not modified by 
  74. the OEM.
  75.  
  76. THE SCREEN WILL TEMPORARILY FLASH AND GO BLACK.  PLEASE WAIT FOR THE SOURCE 
  77. DIRECTORY DIALOG TO APPEAR.
  78.  
  79. 16. The Source Directory dialog will be displayed.  Set the source directory 
  80. to the location of disk 1 (S3 DRV1).  Double click on the "Install" button.
  81.  
  82. 17. Insert disk 2 (S3 DRV2) into the floppy drive when prompted.
  83.  
  84. 18. The Installation Program may pause and display prompts to overwrite 
  85. certain files.  Please answer YES for each file.
  86.  
  87. 19. You will be given a message stating that you "Must Shutdown and Restart 
  88. your system for the changes to take effect".  Click the OK button.
  89.  
  90. 20. Remove the driver diskette from the floppy drive.  
  91.  
  92. 21. Shut down and reboot system.  
  93.  
  94. Note:  You can double click the "System" Icon in the System Setup  to 
  95. change resolution before shutting down.
  96.  
  97. After you reboot, your system will come up with your newly installed driver.
  98.  
  99. To Change Resolution:
  100.  
  101. 22. To switch resolutions, double click on the "System" icon in the System 
  102. Setup Folder.
  103.  
  104. 23. Highlight the resolution and close the dialog.
  105.  
  106. 24. Shut down and reboot.
